A full-proof Hampden DOK at 63.8%, a wild high-ester hit of fermented tropical fruit, olives and vinegar over almond pastry and smoky wood, demanding and hot with a very long finish.
Description
Bottled by The Wild Parrot for Sansibar, this is a single cask from Hampden's DOK marque, distilled in 2009 and bottled at eleven years old. DOK sits at the very top of Hampden's ester scale, right at the traditional Jamaican ceiling, so this is about as loud and uncompromising as the distillery gets, here matured the long continental way in Europe.
Distilled on the double-retort pot stills from molasses and aged in ex-bourbon oak in the cooler European climate, eleven continental years add wood without taming the marque. The nose is pineapple, ester, tropical fruit and marzipan; the palate turns fermented and intense with pineapple, olives and vinegar, closing on ester, pineapple, fermented funk and tropical fruit with a smoky-wood edge and a very long fade. Unsweetened and bottled at a hot 63.8%, it hits hard and runs long, demanding air and patience. A wild, divisive DOK strictly for seasoned enthusiasts who chase maximum Hampden funk.
