Description
Single malt Teaninich, bottled by James Eadie, aged 15 year old from 2009, drawn from cask 713230 and bottled at 55.1%. Just 295 bottles were filled. Teaninich was built in 1817 in the northern Highlands at Alness, and it is rarely seen as a single malt in its own right. In 1887 it became the first distillery north of Inverness with electricity and a telephone.
The spirit was run from a clear wort through the distillery's tall stills, to build a clean, waxy, grassy character. A sherry butt held it, the wood lending raisin and walnut. Past a decade the grass deepens, the wax and a soft honey building over green fruit. The penetrating, fresh acidity of the spirit keeps it lively with age. Most casks are refill ex-Bourbon, which lets the grassy spirit show through. Captain Hugh Munro built the distillery to give his tenants' barley a buyer.
At cask strength 55.1% it is muscular yet green. The Oloroso adds figgy fruit and a warm nuttiness, and a fresh, oily grassiness meet soft vanilla and honey from the cask. The texture is light and oily, the grass threaded with honey. A long, oily finish carries a green lift. This is a light, grassy Highland single malt.
