A single cask Diamond from Transcontinental Rum Line at 16 years, a dry, straightforward cask-strength Demerara of caramel, vanilla and burnt sugar over wood and light smoke, unsweetened with a firm alcohol edge at 60.4%.
Description
A single cask Diamond 2003 selected for La Maison du Whisky by Transcontinental Rum Line, drawn from the Diamond distillery that runs all of Guyana's heritage stills. At a touch over 16 years and bottled at cask strength, it offers a no-frills column-still Demerara rather than a dense, layered showpiece.
Maturated from molasses in ex-bourbon wood at 60.4%, it noses on vanilla, wood, fruit and burnt sugar, then delivers caramel, vanilla, spice and wood, with a finish of liquorice, vanilla, wood and caramel. Unsweetened and full proof, it shows the straightforward Diamond profile with light smoke and fruit over a noticeable alcohol heat that benefits from water and time. It reads as solid rather than dazzling, a young-tasting cask-strength Guyana that suits drinkers already comfortable with dry, high-proof Demerara and not chasing fireworks.
