A bone-dry Filipino white rum from Tanduay that leans more spirit than sugar, with a sake-like wine edge on the nose and a sharp, faintly medicinal palate tipping into nail polish, very much a mixing base at bottling strength.
Description
Tanduay is one of the largest rum producers in the world, and its Silver sits at the unaged, entry end of the Filipino range, a light column-still spirit made for cocktails and long drinks rather than quiet sipping. This is the workhorse white, built for volume and the bartender's well, not for contemplation at room temperature.
In the Spanish-leaning tradition it is molasses-based and distilled clean on a column still, so what reaches the glass is more about the raw spirit than any cask. The nose reads oddly vinous and sake-like, the palate runs sharp and alcoholic with a bitter, medicinal streak and a flash of solvent, and the finish stays short and edgy. It earns its keep buried in a punch or a citrus-forward mix, where the rough edges disappear, rather than served neat.
