Description
This Tamdhu, an official release, drawn from cask Batch 1 and bottled at 53.8%. Just 4800 bottles were filled. Tamdhu was founded in 1897 by a group of blenders in Knockando, in the heart of Speyside, and it was revived by Ian Macleod Distillers in 2013. The old Knockando railway station serves as the distillery's visitor centre.
The spirit was run through the distillery's onion shaped stills, and laid down in Oloroso casks for its sherried depth. An Oloroso sherry cask wrapped the malt in dried fruit and a nutty depth. Carrying no age, it leans on dried fruit, nuts and a warm spice. The full bodied make carries the sherry cask well across long maturation. Water is drawn from the Tamdhu Spring on the Speyside site. The distillery was built on a spot once known for illicit distilling. A full, fruity spirit gives Tamdhu the weight to carry active sherry wood. An in house cooperage was set up in 2019 to manage its sherry casks. Tamdhu sits among the great sherried Speysiders, a sister to Macallan in style.
At a natural 53.8% it is full and rich. The Oloroso brings a rich, sherried fruitiness. A baked apple and a warm ginger lift it. It closes long, sherried and warm. This is the sherry cask malt of Knockando.
