Description
This Tamdhu was from the independent bottler Douglas McGibbon, a 6 year old release from 2014, drawn from cask DMG14163 and bottled at 46%. A release of 429 bottles. Tamdhu, built in 1897 on a Speyside site once known for smuggling, is famed for its sherry cask whisky. Under Ian Macleod it is matured chiefly in sherry seasoned Spanish and American oak.
Distilled on soft Speyside water in onion stills, building the rich, sherried style Tamdhu is known for. Sherry seasoned oak gave the dried fruit richness Tamdhu is known for. At this age the spirit is fresh and fruity, the sherry bright over orchard fruit. The fragrant, fruity spirit has the weight to stand up to active sherry wood. An in house cooperage was set up in 2019 to manage its sherry casks. Tamdhu sits among the great sherried Speysiders, a sister to Macallan in style. The Spey valley's cool air gives a slow, even maturation in the warehouses. Tamdhu was built in 1897 by a consortium of blenders led by William Grant.
At 46% it is clean and fruity. The Oloroso brings fig, raisin and a gentle ginger. Beneath it run fig, raisin and a warm spice. It finishes rich, fruity and warming. This is Tamdhu's classic sherried Speyside style.
