Description
This Tamdhu was from the independent bottler Douglas Laing, aged 12 year old from 2007, drawn from cask DL 13984 and bottled at 48.4%. The outturn was 415 bottles. Set in Knockando, in the heart of Speyside, Tamdhu has distilled since 1897. Under Ian Macleod it is matured chiefly in sherry seasoned Spanish and American oak.
The spirit was run through the distillery's onion shaped stills, and laid down in Oloroso casks for its sherried depth. It rested in ex-Bourbon oak, the wood adding a light honeyed sweetness. Past a decade the fruit deepens into fig, raisin, nuts and a warm ginger spice. Sherry seasoned oak is central to the house style, lending dried fruit and a nutty depth. A full, fruity spirit gives Tamdhu the weight to carry active sherry wood. An in house cooperage was set up in 2019 to manage its sherry casks. Tamdhu sits among the great sherried Speysiders, a sister to Macallan in style.
At cask strength 48.4% it is rich and full. The American oak brings vanilla and a honeyed apple. Beneath it run fig, raisin and a warm spice. Raisin and a warm ginger draw out the close. This is Tamdhu's classic sherried Speyside style.
