Description
A Strathclyde single grain, selected and bottled by Duncan Taylor, a 30 year old from 1989, drawn from cask 6427494 and bottled at 55.2%. Only 88 bottles were released. Strathclyde was first built in 1927 on the south bank of the Clyde in Glasgow, and it remains Glasgow's last working distillery. It is the only distillery left in Glasgow, once one of Scotland's great whisky cities.
Distilled continuously in twin Coffey stills from wheat, giving a clean, high strength grain whisky. It was matured in refill ex-Bourbon oak, lending coconut and vanilla. Past twenty five years the spirit turns oily and dessert sweet while staying clean. Maturation in ex-Bourbon wood suits the light, sweet grain particularly well. It is now part of the Chivas Brothers stable, working quietly in the city. Glasgow once held distilleries across the city; today only Strathclyde remains. Aged single grain has become prized for its soft, oily, dessert sweet character.
At its natural 55.2% it is concentrated. The ex-Bourbon gives coconut, toffee and crème brûlée. The mouthfeel is oily, the coconut carried on a sweet body. A long, oily finish carries a coconut lift. This is a soft, dessert sweet Lowland grain whisky.
