Description
Single grain Strathclyde, an independent Cadenhead's bottling, a 29 year old release from 1989 and bottled at 50.8%. Only 126 bottles were released. Set in the heart of Glasgow, Strathclyde has made grain whisky since 1927. Strathclyde stands on the site of an old cotton mill in the Gorbals.
Distilled in column stills for a light, clean grain spirit, building the light Glasgow grain style. Ex-Bourbon casks held the spirit, soft oak that drives the grain's sweetness. Past twenty five years the spirit turns oily and dessert sweet while staying clean. Long ageing turns light grain into a deep, oily, dessert sweet whisky. The malt distillery Kinclaith lived inside its walls from 1957 until 1975. Single grain releases are rare, almost all of them from independent bottlers. Light grain spirit takes oak readily, so long ageing brings out coconut and toffee. The distillery sits in the Gorbals on the south bank of the Clyde.
At cask strength 50.8% it is full bodied. The ex-Bourbon gives coconut, toffee and crème brûlée. Beneath it run coconut, vanilla and a soft oil. It finishes clean, sweet and buttery. This is an old Glasgow single grain whisky.
