Description
This official Speyburn single malt, a 10 year old and bottled at 40%. Speyburn was founded in 1897 by the Hopkins brothers on the northern edge of Rothes in Speyside, and it still runs Charles Doig's 1897 distillery. Charles Doig, inventor of the distillery pagoda, designed it, and his ventilator still tops the stillhouse.
The spirit was run through onion shaped stills and worm tub condensers for a rounded make, to build a clean, orchard fruit character. It was matured in refill ex-Bourbon oak, lending honey and vanilla. At this age the spirit is fresh and fruity, the apple and pear bright. Worm tub condensing gives a fuller, faintly sulphury new make that matures into a delicate, fragrant fruit. Speyburn sits in a wooded glen on the edge of Rothes, one of Speyside's prettiest distilleries. Charles Doig, who designed it, invented the pagoda roof now seen across Scotch distilleries. It was the first Scottish distillery fitted with drum maltings, still preserved on site.
At 40% it is smooth and fruity. A fresh, fruity sweetness meet soft vanilla and honey from the cask. Beneath it run apple, honey and a soft spice. It closes long, fruity and honeyed. This is a classic, fruity Speyside single malt.
