Slowdrink Pirates of the Danubian: The Cursed Danube Doubloon 2018

Slowdrink is an independent label, and this characterfully named Panamanian draws on Varela Hermanos stock, the dominant Panamanian producer and a major source for bottlers. From a 2018 distillation, it is bottled unsweetened at a robust 60.2%.

Panamanian ron is soft and mellow by nature, distilled from molasses on a column still in the Spanish style. Presented overproof and without dosage, that gentle base is recast in a bolder, drier light, with the higher strength carrying cane sweetness and light spice with more force. Expect a warming, full strength Panamanian that rewards a little water, the extra proof adding energy and grip to an otherwise easygoing regional character.
