A 2007 single cask Barbados rum from Samaroli, fourteen years old at a measured 45%, pairing pineapple and orchard fruit with a glue-tinged ester lift over a pungent, woody frame.
Description
Samaroli is one of the old purist bottlers, known for elegant single casks reduced to a sociable strength rather than bottled at full proof. This Barbados rum from the 2007 vintage runs fourteen years and lands at 45%, drawn from a single ex-bourbon cask of pot and column distillate in the classic island blend.
The molasses spirit shows the fruitier side of Barbados, pineapple and orchard fruit lifted by a glue-like ester note that signals lively fermentation, with light wood and faint smoke behind it. On the palate it turns pungent and woody, rounder and softer at this proof than a cask strength release would be. Matured in the European manner at a reduced strength, it offers a gentler, more contemplative read on aged Bajan rum, unsweetened and balanced rather than loud.
