Cocoa, dried fruit, coffee and leather wrapped in dry sherry make this 21 Year Old Port Mourant from Rum Nation a heavy, medicinal sipper off the double wooden pot still, full bodied and serious at 58 percent.
Description
Rum Nation bottled this Port Mourant in its Rare Rums tier from the 1999 vintage, twenty-one years old and finished in sherry. Port Mourant runs off the double wooden pot still, Guyana's heaviest and most distinctive, and the Rare Rums line keeps things dry, so the sherry adds richness rather than sugar.
Molasses based and unsweetened, it leans dark and full bodied. The nose is heavy with leather, anise, prunes and sherried fruit, the palate brings dark cocoa, dried fruit, tea and a firm sherry note, and the finish turns smoky and toasted with coffee, leather and oak over a long, warm fade. A faint sulphur edge blows off with air. At 58 percent it is concentrated and medicinal in the way Port Mourant devotees prize, a serious sipping Demerara for experienced, patient palates.
