Description
A distillery bottling of Royal Lochnagar in the Rare Malts Selection, a 24 year old release from 1972 and bottled at 55.7%. Set on the Balmoral estate's doorstep in Deeside, Royal Lochnagar has distilled since 1845. John Begg invited his royal neighbours over, and the 1848 visit is claimed as the first ever distillery tour.
The spirit was made in one of Scotch's smallest still pairs, condensed in worm tubs, for a deep, fruity make of unusual weight for its size. Ex-Bourbon casks held the spirit, soft oak that lets the malt and fruit lead. At this age it is full and rounded, the fruit folded into a rich, spiced body. A short fermentation and small stills give a deep, characterful make. Queen Victoria is said to have laced her claret with the make after that visit. The distillery sits at the foot of Lochnagar, the mountain that gives it its name. Water is drawn from springs in the Deeside hills above the River Dee.
At 55.7%, undiluted, it is deep and weighty. Vanilla and a creamy note from the barrel, with apple, malt and a gentle spice. The texture is full and rounded, the fruit lifted by toffee. A warming, malty finish lingers. This is a robust, sherried Highland single malt.
