Description
Gordon & MacPhail bottled this Royal Brackla single malt, a 12 year old release from 1969 and bottled at 40%. Royal Brackla was founded in 1812 by Captain William Fraser on the Earl of Cawdor's estate near Nairn, and its whisky won the first royal warrant ever given to a Scotch, from William IV. Captain Fraser, late of the army in India, shipped his spirit south to beat the local smugglers.
The spirit was made in copper pot stills after a long fermentation, for a fruity, honeyed make of real finesse. An ex-Bourbon barrel shaped it, gentle American oak beneath the fruit. Mid age brings a fuller honey and a deeper dried fruit note. Sherry wood is central to the house style, lending dried fruit and a nutty depth. Captain William Fraser, an army man returned from India, built the distillery in 1812. Water for the make is drawn from the Cawdor Burn in the northern Highlands.
Bottled at 40%, it is rounded. Vanilla and a light cream from the barrel runs under a refined, fruity sweetness. A dried fruit and a gentle oak spice give it real depth. A long, honeyed finish carries a fruity lift. This is a fragrant Highland single malt of real finesse.
