Rivière du Mât Rhum Agricole Vieux Cuvée Spéciale

Riviere du Mat in Reunion makes this Vieux Cuvee Speciale from fresh-pressed sugar cane juice, distilled on a column and aged in oak. Reunion lies far from the Caribbean in the Indian Ocean, and while it sits outside the Martinique AOC it has a long agricole tradition, with tropical heat speeding the maturation.

The profile leans into the wood: tropical fruit and citrus over woody, faintly spirity notes on the nose, then an oaky palate carrying tropical fruit and a general fruitiness. Blind, it shows the raisin, dark chocolate, leather and fresh-cut grass that mark out an aged cane-juice rum. At a soft 45 percent it is an approachable, oak-led vieux, drier and more vegetal than a sweet molasses rum even as the barrel leads. A gentle aged agricole for neat sipping where the tropical fruit and oak settle together.
