Description
This Isle of Raasay single malt from the Sherry Quarter Cask Release and bottled at 52%. The Isle of Raasay Distillery, opened in 2017, is the first legal distillery on its tiny Hebridean island. Raasay released its first single malt in 2020, three years after the first spirit ran.
It was worked through a lantern wash still with a cooling jacket and a swan neck spirit still, following a fermentation as long as 118 hours, drawing out a dark berry sweetness. A sherry cask wrapped the young spirit in dried fruit and a nutty depth. With no age statement, it shows the bright, fruit driven style of a young island malt. The spirit is bottled at natural colour and without chill filtration, true to the house. Every bottle is natural in colour and free of chill filtration. The Na Sia single casks let drinkers taste each thread of the six cask recipe. A population of around 160 makes Raasay one of Scotland's smallest distilling islands.
At its natural 52% it is concentrated. The Oloroso and Pedro Ximenez sherry bring raisin, date, fig and walnut, with a soft island smoke behind. Soft fruit and a clean malt sit behind the sweetness. Berry fruit and vanilla draw out the close. This is Raasay's fresh, fruit driven island style.
