Description
A distillery release of Isle of Raasay from the Sherry Quarter Cask Release and bottled at 52%. Raasay is a young Hebridean distillery, the first ever to legally distil on the Isle of Raasay. The distillery is vertically integrated, doing everything on the island from mash to bottle.
Distilled in Italian built copper stills, a lantern wash still and a swan neck spirit still, the make carried a blackberry fruit from its long fermentation. Maturation in sherry quarter casks drove a fast, rich dried fruit character. Carrying no age, it leans on vivid fruit and active cask character. A short but intense maturation suits the fruit forward Raasay character. First fill and virgin casks let this young spirit gain depth quickly. The distillery opened in 2017 and poured its first single malt in 2020. Raasay is a small island in the Inner Hebrides, just east of Skye.
Undiluted at 52%, it is powerful and fruity. The Oloroso and Pedro Ximenez sherry bring raisin, date, fig and walnut over a gentle wisp of peat. The mouthfeel is round, the berry fruit carried on a sweet body. A warming, fruit forward finish lingers. This is a lively single malt from the Inner Hebrides.
