A 30 year Mount Gay blend at 43%, mature and unsweetened, with vanilla, toasted coconut, plum, dried tropical fruit and leather over gentle oak, an elegant older Barbados sipper without cask-strength heft.
Description
Mount Gay markets itself as the world's oldest commercial rum distillery, its deed dated 1703, and this Old Cask Selection 1703 is a blend of rums said to range from around ten to thirty years from the St Lucy estate. Pot and column still rum, oak-aged and unsweetened, it represents the heritage end of authentic Barbados.
Matured in ex-bourbon oak, the long ageing shows in its poise: vanilla, smoke, fruit and leather on the nose, then a palate of wood, vanilla and gentle sweetness, finishing on cream toffee, dried tropical fruit and soft spice. The blend of ages lends it depth and balance, and it carries the unmistakable feel of an old rum without any sugar to round it off. At 43% it favours elegance over power, making it a relaxed sipper for bourbon drinkers and Mount Gay fans wanting a classic, mature Bajan profile, neat or with a drop of water.
