Moon Import Port Mourant Demerara Rum 1995

Drawn from the Port Mourant still, the double wooden pot still made of greenheart that no modern equipment can replicate, this 1995 vintage was selected by the long-running Italian house Moon Import. Eleven years of ageing and a port-cask period sit behind a Guyanese molasses rum bottled at 46%, firm enough to show the still without masking it.

Port Mourant is the heaviest and most distinctive of the heritage Demerara stills, and bottlings in its mould tend to run oily and pungent, with anise and liquorice, prune and plum, pencil shavings and a whisper of tar and smoke. The port finish would be expected to push the dark-fruit side forward. Expect a polarising, unmistakable Demerara rather than a soft and sweet one.
