A 19 year old Nicaraguan from the 1989 vintage, aged in Ex-Bourbon oak into milk chocolate, cherry and plum with a leathery, lightly floral finish, gently sweet and rounded at 43%.
Description
Mombacho 19 Years Old 1989 is a single vintage Nicaraguan that has spent nearly two decades maturing, a long run for a rum aged in a warm climate where oak extraction moves fast. The age is real here, not a solera marketing number, and it shows in the depth of the spirit.
Distilled on column stills from molasses and laid down in Ex-Bourbon barrels, it carries the tropical ageing signature of dark fruit and roasted wood. Expect milk chocolate, cherry and plum on the nose, then dark chocolate, leather and a roasted edge across the palate, with a soft finish that drifts toward lavender and a faint soapiness from the long oak. Nicaraguan rum tends toward the cleaner, more spirit forward end of the Spanish style, and while the sugar status is undisclosed, this drinks rounded rather than openly sweet.
