A raw, ten year Worthy Park from Mezan, this unsweetened pot still rum shows funky banana and pear over brown sugar, malt and a vegetal, cocoa finish, an unfussy Jamaican bottled without reduction tricks at 46%.
Description
Mezan bottles rum in a deliberately unadulterated style, no added sugar and no colouring, letting the distillate speak. This 2011 Worthy Park is a ten year old from the precise single estate of St. Catherine, presented at an approachable 46% so the distillery character leads rather than the alcohol.
Distilled from molasses on the pot still and matured in ex-bourbon oak, it shows a funky nose of overripe banana, glue and other tropical fruit with a hint of vanilla. The aroma carries tropical fruit, banana, pear and brown sugar, the palate turns spicy and fruity with banana, pear and malt, and the finish runs vegetal and bitter with cocoa. It is a raw, honest Jamaican rather than a polished, rounded one, with the youthful edges left in. A characterful pour for drinkers who like their Worthy Park unsweetened, natural and true to the cask.
