Matugga Distillers Golden Rum is a no-age-statement golden rum from the British distiller, a molasses spirit drawing on East African sugarcane roots and bottled sweetened at 42%. It sits in the soft, approachable corner of the category, a characterful but easygoing pour with its own signature rather than a serious aged sipper.

The nose leans tropical and syrupy, with mango, citrus and other tropical fruit, while the palate brings caramel, citrus, pear and vanilla into a finish that turns faintly smoky, chocolatey and medicinal. Honesty is fair here, the rum is sweetened and reads as quite sweet and a little unnatural to some, the added sugar smoothing the spirit at the expense of definition. There is a touch of funk and individuality that lifts it above the most anonymous golden rums, but overall it is a soft, simple, sweet bottle best enjoyed easy or in a mixer.
