A long aged Panamanian from Malecon’s Seleccion Esplendida, a 1987 vintage at 29 years built on oak, vanilla, spice and a nutty sweetness, a light and balanced 40% sipper with classic mellow Panama character.
Description
Malecon Seleccion Esplendida 1987 is a 29 Year Old Panamanian ron from the 1987 vintage, bottled under the Malecon label. Like its older sibling it belongs to the soft, vanilla led Panamanian tradition fed by the country's large bulk producers, column distilled and aged in ex-bourbon oak across nearly three decades.
The extended ageing brings a classic mellow profile: oak, woody notes, spice and vanilla on the nose, then sweetness, wood, a nutty edge and oak on the palate, closing on spice, nuts and more oak. It is light and well balanced, with a touch of oak and vanilla and a gentle, slightly sweet character that makes for relaxed sipping at 40%. Drinkers note that for all the age it stays fairly delicate, with a short finish and a softer mouthfeel than the years might imply, so it is best taken as an easy, light Panamanian pour rather than a powerhouse old rum.
