A ten year Mauritian rum from Liquid Treasures, distilled from molasses and finished in a whisky cask, drinking like a light peated malt with medicinal smoke, ginger and cocoa rather than classic rum sweetness, unsweetened at 51.9%.
Description
This 2010 is an independent single cask from Liquid Treasures, drawn from the Labourdonnais distillery in Mauritius. Unlike most of the island's cane-juice output, this one is honestly a molasses rum, given a whisky-cask treatment and bottled unsweetened at cask strength, a deliberately unusual rum aimed at drinkers who enjoy a smoky twist.
The whisky cask dominates the profile so completely that the rum almost disappears beneath it. The nose is smoky and whisky-led with ginger and grapes, the palate carries whisky, smoke, ginger and a solventy edge, and the finish stays smoky with cocoa. The overall effect is closer to a light peated single malt than a sweet aged rum, with medicinal smoke, herbs, grape and cherry. At 51.9% it is a curiosity that will reward whisky drinkers and disappoint anyone expecting vanilla-caramel rum, so it is best approached with that expectation set.
