Description
TnT Casks bottled this Ledaig matured to 15 year old from 2009, drawn from cask 700033 and bottled at 47.5%. The outturn was 154 bottles. Ledaig is the heavily peated single malt of Tobermory distillery, the only distillery on the Isle of Mull, founded in 1798. The distillery makes two malts: the unpeated Tobermory and the peated Ledaig.
It was run through the distillery's boil ball stills from peated barley, to build the medicinal, briny Ledaig character. Maturation came in ex-Bourbon wood, vanilla beneath the soot. Past a decade the smoke softens, the soot and brine settling over ripe fruit. The phenols soften with age into a gentle, sweet wood smoke. The distillery sits at the head of the bay, beneath a steep wooded hill. Both malts feed the Scottish Leader and Black Bottle blends as well as single malt. The distillery was refurbished and its stills renewed between 2017 and 2019.
Bottled at a cask strength 47.5%, it is intense. Soot, sea salt and a sweet fruit, and honeyed vanilla comes through from the ex-Bourbon. Beneath the smoke run brine, tar and a sweet fruit. The finish runs smoky, sweet and warm. This is the peated island malt of Mull.
