A twelve-year Port Mourant from Kintra off the double wooden pot still, Port-finished at 55.9%, ester-forward and pungent with pineapple, vanilla and banana up front, turning sweet, heavy and pleasantly stinky over dry oak with air.
Description
Kintra is a Dutch-rooted bottler, and this 2005 Port Mourant is a single cask of the double wooden pot still behind old navy Demerara, caught at twelve years, finished in Port and bottled at 55.9%. It leans hard into the ester-driven, funky side of the marque, more Jamaica-adjacent in lift than most Demerara.
The nose is bright with esters, pineapple, vanilla and banana, the palate turns vanilla-led but astringent with more ester and citrus, and the finish brings vanilla, olive, wood and oak. With air it gets sweeter and heavier, developing the pungent, stinky character that PM lovers prize, the dry oak of the cask harmonising with the fruit. The Port finish adds depth without obvious sweetness, as this is a dry style at heart. This is Port Mourant for drinkers who chase clearly pronounced esters and do not mind a funky, polarising edge.
