A young vieux agricole from Karukera in Guadeloupe at a gentle 42%, light and naturally sweet with vanilla, citrus and fresh cane over toasted notes and mild spice, a comfortable bridge into aged agricole for newcomers.
Description
Karukera, relaunched in 2002 and known for its single-cane bottlings, makes this Rhum Vieux Agricole in Guadeloupe from fresh-pressed sugarcane juice. Bottled at 42%, it is a young aged agricole pitched as an easy, rounded everyday sipper rather than a grassy challenge.
Distilled on a column still run low to hold the vegetal cane congeners, then matured in oak, it stays light and gently woody with a natural sweetness from the wood. The nose is fresh and fairly intense, with citrus, vanilla, a floral lift and a grassy cane edge. The palate is woody and spicy with nutmeg, and the finish brings spice, fruit and a dry, woody close. There is a touch of coconut and mocha for those who look. The added-sugar status is not documented and the sweetness reads as oak rather than dosage. A comfortable introduction for drinkers meeting agricole without the full force of grass or high proof.
