A single cask Guadeloupe agricole from the 2006 vintage at cask strength, deep and dry with leather, tobacco, cedar and dried apricot over a roasted, toasted frame, weighty yet composed at 48.3%.
Description
Karukera, relaunched in 2002 and made at the Esperance distillery in Guadeloupe, sits under the island's IGP and is known for considered single-cane and single-cask work. This Fut 65 release is a single cask from the 2006 vintage, distilled from fresh-pressed sugar cane juice and bottled at cask strength, 48.3%.
Distilled on column and given long tropical ageing, it leans into the drier, more contemplative side of aged agricole. Leather, roasted notes, sandalwood and cedar lead the nose, the palate brings leather, tobacco, dried apricot and more cedar, and the finish stays roasted and toasted with cedar and leather throughout. The oak presence is substantial, woven through grassy cane rather than masking it, and the strength gives weight without harshness. A serious, savoury single cask for those who like their agricole mature, woody and dry rather than fresh and green.
