Isautier Alfred (Rhum Vieux 12 Ans D‘Age) 2005

Isautier Alfred is a twelve year old rum from the long-established Isautier distillery on Reunion, bottled at 45% from the 2005 vintage. Reunion sits outside the French AOC, and despite the agricole framing this expression is made from molasses, giving it a rounder, more whisky-adjacent character than a cane-juice blanc.

Matured in ex-bourbon oak, it opens with floral, citrus and light grassy notes over roasted wood, chocolate and earthy spice, finishing on raisin, allspice and more toasted oak. The profile is dry and savoury, sitting in an interesting space between whisky and agricole, and the modest strength keeps it easy to drink. Certified unsweetened, it makes a solid stepping stone for drinkers building their palate, and pairs naturally with a cigar as a slow evening sipper.
