Description
Henry Downes No.9 is a blended Irish whiskey bottled by Henry Downes & Co Ltd, a historic spirits merchant and public house on Thomas Street in Waterford city dating back to 1797. Henry Downes is one of the few remaining traditional Irish bonders, a trade category that once handled whiskey maturation and blending independently of the distilleries themselves. The pub remains in operation today with its 18th century interior largely unchanged and its own bottled whiskey served across the bar. The source distillery for the base spirit is not publicly disclosed, as with most historic Irish bondings.
The whiskey is a blend rather than a single malt, bottled at 40% for a softer, more approachable profile than the cask strength or 50% releases typical of Waterford Distillery's own output. Tasting notes describe a slightly darker shade of pale straw with a soft malty nose, wet leather and a sweet biscuity palate closing on dry peppery spice. A historical pour rather than a technical showcase, Henry Downes No.9 reflects the traditional Irish bonder style that largely disappeared from the market through the 20th century.
