Grays Mauricia Creation

A Mauricia Creation from Grays, a Mauritian producer working from fresh-pressed sugar-cane juice. Mauritius sits outside the protected agricole appellations, so this is best described as agricole-style: cane-juice spirit, column distilled and bottled at 48% with no age statement, an unaged or very lightly rested white.

The nose is the high point, very fruity and fresh with lots of grass and real intensity, plus a creamy touch. The palate does not quite match it, turning dry, earthy and mineral with citrus in a clean, lean register, and the finish is simply dry. It drinks like a very clean cane-juice spirit, well made but filtered toward restraint, so some of the oilier, more characterful cane notes are pared back. A pleasant, dry white nonetheless, and good in its quiet way. Added sugar is not declared and it reads dry throughout. A crisp, mineral agricole-style rum for those who like the lean side.
