A workhorse Bermudian gold built on column and pot still molasses rum at 40%, leaning metallic and woody with apple, vanilla and a fudge edge, more at home stretched into a Dark and Stormy than studied neat.
Description
Goslings Gold Seal is the gold expression from the Bermuda house best known for its Black Seal and its Dark and Stormy, a blend of imported Caribbean rums married and bottled on the island. It carries no age statement and sits at a soft 40%, built from molasses and run across both column and pot stills for a little more body than a purely light rum.
The profile is direct rather than layered. The nose pushes apple and a touch of vanilla over a clear spirit edge, while the palate turns metallic and young, with fudge and bittersweet young oak before a finish of black pepper, cocoa and a thread of caramel. There is no added sugar here, so it reads dry and slightly raw, which is the point of a mixing rum rather than a flaw. It does its best work long, with ginger beer and lime, where the woody backbone holds up against the spice.
