Description
A distillery release of Glenfarclas, a 12 year old, from 2012, at 46%. Glenfarclas is a Speyside single malt, one of the last great family owned distilleries in Scotch. It holds some sixty eight thousand casks on site in dunnage warehouses, with stock from every year since 1953. It was licensed in 1836 under Robert Hay and bought in 1865 by John Grant for 511 pounds.
Drawn from a thick, heavy wash, the direct fired stills lending a nutty depth. An Oloroso sherry cask held it, drawing the rich spirit on over the years. Through integration spirit and wood marry, vanillin rounding out as esters lend riper orchard fruit and a chocolate depth. Active wood drives the maturation, the cask deep in the malt. The wood frames the spirit without ever stripping the full Speyside body. Years in oak deepen the spirit to a darker gold, the body growing rounder and more resinous with time.
At 46% it is smooth and rich. A rich orchard sweetness and dark sugar, with dried fruit, fig and walnut from the cask. It is full and fruity, the spirit carrying the cask. The finish is rounded, dark and spiced. This is a full bodied Speyside single malt of real richness.
