Description
This official Glendronach, a 27 year old, from 1992, cask 182, at 49.5%, 613 bottles in all. Glendronach is a richly sherried Highland single malt from the Valley of Forgue, built on full bodied spirit and Spanish oak. It was the last distillery in Scotland to fire its stills with coal, converting to steam only in 2005.
The spirit was taken gently through wash and spirit stills, for a weighty, full spirit the sherry casks then deepen. It was fully matured in an Oloroso sherry butt, the wood deep in the rich spirit. In the oxidative, evaporative years the spirit concentrates to dried fruit, dark chocolate and a waxy, resinous depth. Active first fill sherry wood drives the maturation, the cask deep in the malt. Vanillin and oak lactones from the wood lend vanilla and a soft coconut over the fruit. The casks are picked closely, the wood matched to the rich Glendronach make.
At 49.5%, undiluted, it is dark and full. A rich orchard sweetness and dark sugar, with dried fruit, fig and walnut from the cask. Fig, honey and a dark chocolate fill the middle. It finishes long, full and fruity. This is a full bodied Highland single malt of real richness.
