Description
A 26 year old Glendronach, a distillery bottling, from 1992, cask 5865, at 48.6%, 727 bottles in all. Glendronach is a Highland single malt known for its heavy Oloroso and Pedro Ximenez sherry maturation. It ferments in Oregon pine washbacks over long fermentations for a full, fruity spirit. It was bought in 1920 by Charles Grant, a son of the founder of Glenfiddich. Its water is the Dronac Burn, which also gave the distillery its name. It was bought in 2008 by Billy Walker's BenRiach company, who rebuilt it as a heavily sherried single malt.
The spirit was drawn from a thick, heavy wash, giving a deep, full bodied Highland spirit. A Pedro Ximenez cask held it, drawing the rich spirit on over the years. At this evaporative stage ellagitannins lend structure while oxidation builds a richer raisin and treacle. The wood frames the spirit without ever stripping the full Highland body.
At a hearty 48.6% it carries real weight. A deep, dark sweetness, with raisin, date and treacle from the cask. Fig, honey and a dark chocolate fill the middle. It finishes long, full and fruity. This is a dark, fruity Highland single malt.
