Jewish Whisky Company bottled this Glen Spey, a 14 year old, distilled in 2010, from cask 162270, at 57.5%, one of 235 bottles. Glen Spey is a Speyside single malt from Rothes, founded in 1878 as the Mill of Rothes. Its stills were doubled from two to four in the 1970 expansion, the make still light and grassy. It passed to the London gin house W and A Gilbey in 1887, the first English firm to own a Scottish distillery.
It was distilled from unpeated malt, the purifiers paring it back to a light, grassy core. It was matured in an Oloroso cask, the wood working into the light malt. In integration coconut and vanilla knit with the malt, the hay softening towards a nutty honey. Built for the blender's art, the light make ages with quiet grace as a single malt. Active wood frames the fruit without ever crowding the delicate Speyside spirit. A light oiliness carries a waxy thread through the long, slow maturation.
At its natural 57.5% it is rich and grassy. A light meadow grass and orchard fruit, with dried fruit, fig and walnut from the cask. Soft meadow grass and a nutty malt sit behind the cask. The finish is rounded, nutty and clean. This is the delicate, grassy malt of Rothes.
