An island blend from Compagnie des Indes finished in a heavily peated whisky cask, smoky and dry with dark prunes, anise and pepper as the Scotch character takes the lead and the rum settles into the background at 46%.
Description
CDI Boulet de Canon 6 is an island blend from Compagnie des Indes, the respected French bottler known for terroir led, broad origin releases, here built around a heavily peated whisky cask finish and bottled unsweetened at 46%. It is a rum where the cask, rather than the spirit, sets the tone.
The peated influence is hard to miss, smoke, anise and pepper over dark prunes on the nose, with the palate turning dry and smoky, whisky character to the fore and prunes underneath. The finish stays crisp and smoky with a clear peaty edge. The rum sits mostly in the background, offering some sweetness and nuttiness while the whisky finish dominates, which makes this one for drinkers who actively enjoy that crossover. Approached as a smoky, whisky inflected curiosity rather than a showcase of the base rum, it has plenty of character, though it asks the drinker to meet it halfway.
