A Trinidadian column still rum from T.D.L bottled by Cane Island, smooth and lightly sweet at 43% with banana, vanilla, caramel and gentle oak, plus a faint menthol edge, fine neat or in a rum and cola.
Description
This Cane Island bottling is an eight year old Trinidad rum distilled at T.D.L, the Angostura group's distillery in Port of Spain. Trinidad's modern style is predominantly light, column distilled rum in the Spanish heritage idiom, clean and fragrant rather than heavy or funky, and this fits that mould while keeping a little more character than the entry level expressions.
It is molasses based and column distilled, aged eight years in ex-bourbon oak. The nose runs to vanilla, caramel, wood and burnt sugar, and the palate is sweet with caramel, dried fruit and spice, finishing on spice, oak and molasses, with a faint menthol, almost medicinal note that long time TDL drinkers will recognise. At 43% it is smooth and easygoing rather than intense, and stops short of the heavy sweetness of some Spanish style rums. It is a versatile stepping stone, pleasant neat and reliable as the heart of a rum and cola.
