An unsweetened Guatemalan solera from Botran, made from sugar cane honey and column distilled, leaning on dried fruit, tropical fruit, spice and chocolate in a soft, gently sweet sipper at 40%.
Description
Botran Solera 1893 is a Guatemalan rum built, like its highland neighbour Zacapa, on a solera system where older and younger spirits marry over time, so its 12 reflects the system rather than a flat age. It is made from sugar cane honey rather than straight molasses, column distilled and bottled at 40%, and notably it is declared unsweetened, which sets it slightly apart from sweeter solera rums.
The nose offers dried fruit, spice, a sweet note and chocolate, while the palate carries tropical fruit, wood, spice and a sweet edge, finishing on fruit, spice and sweetness. Reviewers treat it as an easy, versatile pour, with one highlighting how well it mixes with fresh coconut water. The solera style gives it a soft, rounded character, and the lack of added sugar means the gentle sweetness is largely cane and barrel derived. It reads as an approachable, lightly sweet Guatemalan that works neat or in relaxed tropical mixes.
