A cane-honey Guatemalan anejo from the Botran house, column-distilled and bottled unsweetened, with caramel, chocolate, coffee and nutty depth over a rounded dried-fruit finish, a soft and approachable forty percent anniversary pour.
Description
Casa Botran 75 Aniversario marks a milestone for Industrias Licoreras de Guatemala, the highland producer behind both Botran and Zacapa. Unusually for the region it is built not from molasses but from sugar cane honey, the concentrated cane-juice base that also defines Zacapa, lending a particular richness to the Central American smooth style.
Column-distilled and matured in the warm Guatemalan climate, it is bottled without added sugar, leaning on cask and base spirit for its sweetness. The nose offers fruit, caramel, chocolate and dried fruit, with a nutty, coffee-tinged palate and a round, cocoa-edged finish. It drinks soft and easy, a classic Central American in the Spanish mould, and while some find it leans sweet and light for the strength, the cane-honey base and dry bottling give it a gentle, dessert-friendly charm well suited to relaxed after-dinner sipping.
