Birkenhof Brennerei Master Edition JON 2017

Birkenhof Brennerei Master Edition JON 2017 is a German pot still rum distilled from molasses, aged a little under two years in ex-bourbon and bottled at 42%. It is a youthful release that shows both the promise of the distillate and the limits of its short time in cask.

The nose is tart and green, apple, raisin and acidity with a fermented edge, while the palate turns earthy and dry with clear ester funk, a hint of Jamaican character and burnt sugar. The finish is fairly short with a bitter, alcoholic note and a flowery lift. There is a likeable signature to the spirit and a touch of funk that hints at ambition, though the youth and a faint impression of added sweetness hold it back from full integration. It is an interesting young rum for those curious about German pot still distillate, best approached on its own terms.
