Dry and grassy, this Bielle 2017 from Marie Galante carries young oak, dried fruit and orange peel over a vegetal cane core, a four-year aged Guadeloupe cane-juice rhum bottled at an approachable 42%.
Description
Bielle is a Marie Galante distillery known for cane-variety experiments and characterful high-proof blancs, and this 2017 is one of its aged cane-juice expressions. Distilled from fresh sugar-cane juice and given four years in oak, it sits within Guadeloupe's IGP rather than the Martinique AOC, a young vieux-style agricole.
Four years in ex-bourbon wood lends a golden colour and a woody, lightly tannic frame, with dried fruit, orange peel and a buttery, barrel-driven edge. Beneath the oak the typical grassy, vegetal agricole notes still show through, keeping it dry and fresh rather than sweet. At 42% it is easy and approachable, if a touch youthful, a solid everyday aged agricole for drinkers who like the cane character left visible under the wood.
