A rare all-Italian cane-juice rum from Sicily, the Bellia family’s Avola bottling, pot-distilled and very young, raw and grappa-like with fruit schnapps, bitter orange and honey, spirity and unsweetened at 52%.
Description
This Avola Rum is an unusual thing, a rum made entirely in Italy, in Sicily, from fresh sugar cane juice in the agricole method by the Bellia family at the Giovi distillery. Pot-distilled, unaged and bottled at 52%, it is a curiosity from a region far better known for wine and grappa.
The youth shows clearly, the spirit reading raw and distillate-forward with fruit schnapps, honey and bitter orange on the nose, then a grappa-like, alcoholic palate with a spicy edge and a short fruit-schnapps finish. It is unsweetened and very much a young white spirit, closer to an Italian eau-de-vie in feel than to a polished Caribbean blanc. This is one for the curious and the collector of oddities, an honest if unrefined snapshot of nascent Italian agricole rather than a smooth crowd-pleaser.
