Description
A 12 year old Ardmore released by Jack Wiebers Whisky World in 2018 under the Fighting Fish series, distilled in 2006 and bottled at 52.1% natural strength. Wiebers has been one of the most consistent German indies for Ardmore since the late 1990s, with Fighting Fish carrying a recognisable koi label aesthetic across multiple distilleries. The 2006 vintage falls in the early Beam Global ownership period, with Fortune Brands having taken control of the Allied Domecq spirits assets in 2005 and the new official Traditional Cask launched in 2007. 186 bottles for the event market.
Distilled in 2006 at the standard Ardmore peat level of 12 to 14 ppm phenol, the spirit was filled at 63.5% into a single ex Bourbon refill American oak cask and matured in dunnage at Kennethmont. The wash stills had converted from direct coal firing to steam heating in early 2001, giving the steam era profile that defines all post 2001 vintages. Twelve years brought the strength to 52.1%, with no chill filtration applied at bottling.
Refill Bourbon at this age frames distillery character cleanly. Cis whisky lactone gives soft coconut and pine, vanillin from oak lignin builds a baked custard register. Steam era distillate lacks the coal era direct flame Maillard products, leaving cleaner apple and pear esters from the Kerry yeast component prominently at the centre. The 12 to 14 ppm peat phenols read as heather smoke, dry leaf and earthy phenolic at moderate intensity rather than dominant smoke.
