Admiral Rodney HMS Monarch is a distillery bottling from Saint Lucia, drawn from column still molasses rum and aged for eleven years. It sits at the soft, approachable end of the island's range, built for easy sipping rather than the dry, estery intensity that the heavier Saint Lucia pot still releases can show.
Maturation runs in ex-bourbon oak, which gives the caramel, vanilla and light toasted wood that carry the palate, joined by gentle spice and candied fruit on a long, warm finish. The rum is sweetened, so it reads round and confectionery rather than bone dry, and at 40% it stays mellow throughout. Best enjoyed neat or over ice when the mood calls for something undemanding.
