A sweet, accessible Panamanian ron at 40%, Abuelo Anejo from Varela Hermanos offers vanilla, caramel and light wood with a dark-chocolate edge, an easy column-still molasses pour most at home as a mixer with cola or in short drinks.
Description
Abuelo Anejo is the entry expression from Varela Hermanos, the Panamanian house at Destileria Don Jose that supplies bulk rum to many independent labels. Made from molasses on a column still, it sits at the soft, easy end of Spanish-style ron, where the light spirit leans on barrel and a touch of sweetness for its character.
The nose carries vanilla, caramel and molasses with a spirity lift, the palate brings wood, a sweet thread and dark chocolate alongside some alcohol bite, and the finish is woody and a little sharp with a toasted edge. This is an openly sweet, straightforward young ron, so the honest read is a versatile mixer rather than a complex neat sipper, the kind of bottle that shines with cola or in a short drink. For familiar vanilla and caramel comfort at a friendly price it does the job, with less depth than its older stablemates.
