Abuelo is the house brand of Varela Hermanos, Panama's dominant producer, distilled on column stills in the smooth, light Spanish-style tradition of the former Spanish colonies. This younger expression is built for easy, everyday drinking, where the barrel rather than the spirit does most of the flavour work.

It shows sweet toffee, caramel and cream alongside the lightly smoky, roasted, almost resinous wood note that often marks Panama rum, finishing soft and gently spiced. The rum is sweetened, so it sits on the rounder, mellower side rather than running dry, smooth and unchallenging at 40%. Honestly placed, it is a solid budget choice that punches a little above its price, equally comfortable as a casual neat pour or in a cocktail, and a fair, approachable everyday rum rather than a contemplative one.
