Description
A herbal liqueur from Hodl Hof in Austria, drawing on a variety of herbs, flowers, seeds and roots from the Joglland region, laid over old distillates of gentian and rowanberry. The gentian base gives it a bitter root spine, while the regional botanicals supply its tangy character, marking it out as a bittersweet herbal digestif rather than a sweet fruit liqueur. At 25% it sits in the herbal liqueur range, with enough strength to read as an after dinner measure.
The nose is roasted coffee, dark chocolate and gentian, the palate spicy and nutty with aniseed and vanilla, finishing long on the palate. In a drink it brings a bitter herbal backbone, roasted coffee and chocolate depth and an aromatic lift, so it works neat as a digestif, long over ice with tonic or cola, or as a bittering component in a stirred herbal cocktail. By regional custom a glass after a hearty meal settles the stomach, which is exactly how a buyer can position it on a menu. Serve well chilled.
