Kraterfeuer is a herbal liqueur from Germany, made by Scheible Brau und Spirituosen in the Swabian Alb and bottled at 26%. It is built on a balanced composition of aromatic herbs, roots and spices, with the name nodding to the Swabian meteor crater, the geologically striking landscape of its home region. The recipe is macerated and slowly worked in the traditional herbal style, giving a finely balanced spicy character rather than a heavy bitter one.

The nose is intensely spicy with cinnamon, cloves, aniseed and fine herbs over a subtle honey sweetness, the palate full bodied and harmonious with a balance of sweet, spicy and slightly bitter herbal notes and a gentle caramel edge, finishing long and warming. Behind the bar it brings warm baking spice, a measured sweetness and a light herbal bitterness, which suits a stirred winter cocktail or a digestif. It is good neat or over ice, and unfolds when gently warmed in the style of a mulled drink during the cold season. Serve it as a classic after dinner digestif.
